Year 5/6 Girls & Boys Cricket

Monday 11th June

We took separate boys and girls teams to Darfield cricket club. The girls team took part in the morning tournament and were drawn in a group with Churchfield, Park Street and High View.

In the first match the girls comfortably beat Chruchfield and followed this up with a closely fought victory against High View. The final group game was against Park Street and we narrowly got beaten. This was enough for us to qualify for the Barnsley finals which are taking place on Tuesday 19th June.

The boys played in the afternoon and were drawn in a group with Churchfield, The Ellis and High View. Again we beat Churchfield and then The Ellis and a win in the last game against High View would see us win the group. After bowling first we managed to keep High View down to their lowest  batting total so far. However, High View fielded superbly and managed to beat us. We finished as runners up in our group and this was enough to qualify for the Barnsley Finals later in the month.

Year 6 Residential

Wednesday 6th June – Friday 8th June

What a fantastic couple of days spent at Edale YHA. The children enjoyed plenty of challenging activities over the course of the few days including, canoeing, crate stacking, archery and abseiling off a 70ft bridge.

It was amazing to see the way everyone supported and reassured each other during the activities. Children were happy to challenge themselves and push themselves outside of their comfort zone and the way they helped each other was fantastic.

They were an absolute credit to the school and it was an absolute pleasure to be part of such a special time in which they have strengthened friendships, bonds and made memories for life.

Year 5/6 Rounders

Tuesday 5th June

We took 10 children (5 boys and 5 girls) to a Rounders tournament at Netherwood School. Eleven other schools took place in the event and we were placed in a group with Brierley, Ladywood and Birkwood.

The winners of each group would go forward to participate at the Barnsley Finals. After a close opening match we managed to beat Brierley 12-8. We followed this up with a 4-1 victory against  Birkwood. We knew that a win in the last game against Ladywood would secure a place at the Barnsley Finals.

Ladywood batted first and and managed to score 2 1/2 rounders, we comfortably best this scoring 7 1/2 to secure a place at the finals, which will take  place on Tuesday 19th June.

A huge well done to the following children: Rhys, Toby, Coby, Jack, Jacob, Abbie, Jessica, Natasha, Elouise and Ellie.

Wednesday 9th May

We took 8 year 3/4 children to a cricket competition at Shaw Lane Cricket Club along with 13 other schools in the locality. We were drawn in a group with Wombwell Park Street and The Mill.

In our Opening group game we took on Wombwell Park Street and in a closely fought contest we narrowly lost by just 10 runs. The next match was against The Mill in a must win match in order to qualify for the quarter finals. We managed to progress after a comfortable win.

The afternoon round of matches started with our quarter final match against Laithes. We won the toss and Matty decided to field first. The signs weren’t good when the Laithes batsmen were hitting the ball all over the pitch in the opening over. However, we turned things around and fielded brilliantly and then performed superbly with the bat to win the match comfortably.

In the semi final we took on Hoyland Common. It was a really close match and we managed to win by just 5 runs. Into the final against High View who fielded 3 or 4 players from local cricket clubs. Unfortunately we were unable to beat High View but put in a fantastic performance to get all the way to the final and I was really proud of all the players. A huge well done to Elouise, Josh, Archie, Megan, Chayse, Charlie, Warren and team captain Matty.

Friday 26th January

The school football team took part in the next round of league matches at Jump Primary School. The team made up of Conor Bacon, Harry Oldfield, Coby Bennett, Hayden Oliver, Toby Crowcroft, Kayden Hastie, Rhys Copnell and captain Jack Fenton, took on Hoyland Common and Jump Primary School.

In the first match we played Hoyland Common and started the game really well and raced into a 2 goal lead with Rhys Copnell getting both goals. Half way through the second half and Common managed to pull one back. Common then dominated the game and were pushing for an equaliser but we managed to hold firm with Conor making several miraculous saves in goal. Finally he was beaten late in the game by a wonder strike. Withe the score at 2-2 we were hanging on and again Conor saved our bacon with more great saves. The match finished with the result 2-2.

Into the second game against Jump and we dominated the game from the start, hitting the post twice and creating several other fantastic chances.  Late in the half Jump managed to pitch a goal with their only meaningful attack of the half. Into the second half and again we created more chances, Jump scored a second leaving us with an uphill task. With just 3 minutes remaining Jack scored to bring us back into the game, sadly we ran out of time and lost the game 2-1.

The team have made me extremely proud, the spirit and determination that they have shown as a team is great to see and they have worked tirelessly in every game we have played. We have become a very competitive team and are managing to show what we can really achieve with hard work.

Well done lads.

Next match Friday 9th February at Greenfield
