Music at Springwood
Our children continue to enjoy a wide range of musical opportunities – to learn instruments, to sing in a choir and to perform for a range of audiences. Every child has music lessons each school year, usually in a block to enable children to build on skills on a regular basis. For children in Kangaroos, Peacocks and Elephants, this has been delivered by Mrs Wright, our Music Teacher and Choir Leader, who is an experienced music teacher and also a Musical Director of Barnsley Children’s Choir. Children in Lions continue to take part in the First Access Programme, having weekly woodwind lessons with Mrs Laycock from Barnsley Music Service.
Our School Choir took part in the Young Voices event in January this year with thousands of other school children from South Yorkshire and beyond. The children learnt a range of songs which they then performed at Sheffield Arena for parents and friends. Amazing, super and brilliant were just some of the words used by the children to describe the experience. They represented our school brilliantly. The choir will be performing some of the songs they learnt for Young Voices at the Summer Term Choir Concert. Choir rehearsals are held on a Friday lunchtime.
A number of children have peripatetic music lessons in school, delivered by staff from Barnsley Music Service. The instruments they learn include drums, piano, keyboard and guitar. The children recently showcased their talents in our Musical Performance Assembly along with Lions’ class on their recorders and our School Choir. It was great to see the children enjoying their performing. There will be further performance opportunities in the Summer Term at the KS2 Music Festival and the Barnsley Vocal Festival.
If your child is interested in learning to play an instrument or would like to join choir, please do encourage them to come and see me.
